There seems to be so much conflicting information about eating carbohydrates these days that it
can all become quite confusing. Carbohydrates are an essential part of a balanced diet,
the key of course is balance and moderation.
What is a carbohydrate?
Carbohydrates are essentially
energy for the body that is
derived from plants.
There are two types of carbohydrates:
- Complex carbohydrates include vegetables and starches such as pasta.
Eating complex carbs such as pasta allows energy to be released slowly into your body.
The bad carbohydrates
Carbohydrates that have been heavily processed are the ones to avoid or should be consumed in moderation
as their energy value has been stripped away. Some examples of
bad carbs include
white sugar,
potato chips,
French fries,
bleached flour and
processed cereals. While they give an instant burst
of energy upon consumption, this energy doesn't last very long and leaves you feeling hungry sooner.
Will carbs make me fat?
A healthy diet is about moderation. If you eat too much of anything it will have a negative effective on your weight.
Carbs are no different. They should be part of every
balanced diet in conjunction with
fresh fruits and vegetables. If eaten moderately, carbs will help keep your weight at a
healthy level and improve your overall energy.
Health Tip
For a healthier lifestyle it is recommended you eat carbs such as
pasta and rice and take
part in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday. Together,
carbs and exercise,
will lead to a happier, healthier you.
